I may or may not be an expert on binge-watching. I’m a pretty big fan of TV in general so it’s no surprise that, for me, deployment means singlehandedly keeping the various streaming services in business. And since I consider myself a little bit of an expert in this binge-watching field, I thought I’d share my list of favorites with all of you. Not all of these are on Netflix, but they are all free with a subscription service like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.
When You need a Pick Me Up
Parks and Recreation (Seasons 1-7 available on Netflix & Hulu): If you know me at all, you’ll have gathered that Parks & Rec is a favorite of mine but I honestly don’t believe you can be in a bad mood while watching this show.
Friends (Seasons 1-10 available on Netflix): This is the comfort food of binge-able TV shows. You’ll literally feel like you’re sitting at Central Perk with old friends.
The Office (Seasons 1-9 on Netflix): Admittedly, I’ve never been able to get into this show but I’ve heard really good things about it and the husband is a big fan so I’m including it.
Arrested Development (Seasons 1-4 on Netflix): This one takes a special type of humor but overall watching the antics of the Bluth family is usually a pretty good mood lifter.
Hart of Dixie (Seasons 1-4 on Netflix): A show that definitely could also fit into the drama category, Hart of Dixie follows Zoey Hart and her adventures in the backwoods of Alabama. This show has it’s ‘What just happened’ moments but at its hart (pun intended) it’s lighthearted comedy gold.
The Mindy Project (Seasons 1-6 available on Hulu): I’m a huge fan of Mindy Kaling and her character Mindi Lahiri is one of my spirit animals. The first few seasons of this show are especially awesome.
New Girl (Seasons 1-6 are on Netflix): Schmidt is by far my very favorite comedy character on television ever. This series is full of laughs and plenty of will-they-or-won’t-they to boot.
When You Need a Dose of Nostalgia
Gilmore Girls (Seasons 1-7 + Year in the Life available on Netflix): The show I most often turn to when I want to be reminded of the good ol’ days.
Dawson’s Creek (Seasons 1-6 on Hulu): Was I the only one who thought this show should have been called Pacey’s Creek??? Or at the very least Joey’s Creek? Whenever I’m feeling a little angsty, this is the show I watch to remind myself how glad I am not to be a teenager.
One Tree Hill (Seasons 1-9 on Hulu): Full disclosure? I lived and breathed this show for a few of my adolescent years. #BrookeDavisForever This is definitely one of those shows I watch as an adult and think “Wow, life in a small town is way more interesting than I remember it being”.
Fuller House (Seasons 1-3 are on Netflix): Another one I’m adding because of other’s recommendations but if you liked watching Full House, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll love the Netflix reboot.
When You’re In Need of a Good Cry
Parenthood (Seasons 1-6 on Netflix): I’m fairly certain that I’ve cried at some point during every Parenthood episode. If you’re in the mood for a family drama that is bound to set off the waterworks, this is it.
This Is Us (Seasons 1-2 on Hulu): Honestly, I can’t get over ‘Jess’s’ shaggy haircut. (I know the weirdest things annoy me in television shows) but it’s become sort of a national phenomenon. Also, from all I’ve heard, it’s a regular ol’ cryfest.
Grey’s Anatomy (Seasons 1-13 on Netflix): Again, not my cup of tea but if you’re after dramatics, Shonda Rhimes is definitely your gal.
When You’re Craving a Good Drama
Downton Abbey (Seasons 1-6 available on Amazon Prime): I was extremely late to the Downton Abbey train but I pretty much fell in love with it during this deployment. It has just the right amount of drama to make things fun but the character-driven plot is what separates the show from some of the others on this list.
Madam Secretary (Seasons 1-3 on Netflix): If you like politically-based shows, you’ll probably enjoy this one. It’s one of my favorites because of it’s real world-esque plot lines and likable characters.
The Crown (Seasons 1-2 on Netflix): From a very young age, my grandmother instilled in me a great love and respect for the British royal family and this show makes me wish I lived close enough to her for us to watch it together. The Crown had me hooked with the first scene and if you’re in the least bit interested in Elizabeth or the royal family, you should definitely put it on your To Be Watched list.
The Good Wife (Seasons 1-7 on Amazon Prime and Hulu): This legal drama follows Alicia Florrick through the ups and downs of her personal life and legal career and it’s oh-so-addicting. I like that the series focuses on defense attorneys in a very realistic way without getting too bogged down in legal-ese.
The Night Manager (Season 1 on Amazon Prime): Two words–Tom Hiddleston.
Sneaky Pete (Seasons 1 & 2 on Amazon Prime): I watched the pilot on a whim about a month ago and was completely hooked. The premise is entertaining and I love that the main character is both likable and unlikable at the same time. I can’t wait to rewatch this series with Zach when he comes home.
As I was making this list, I realized that this list could go on and on. You guys, I think I might have a problem!
Anyway, if you’re looking for some shows to binge-watch, this list should give you a pretty good headstart! What are some of your favorite shows to binge-watch? Have I missed any of your favorites?
