What kinds of things have you discovered about your spouse since you’ve been married?
I’ll tell you one thing I discovered about mine–the man loves Star Wars.
I suppose I should have expected it from him, but since I didn’t watch any of the movies until the tender age of 23, his passionate explanations of the geographical differences between Tatooine and Endor were lost on me for the first four years of our marriage. Now though, after having discovered the badass icon that is Princess Leia, I have fully given in to my husband’s Star Wars obsession. Ok, maybe not fully…I still have no desire to know the inner workings of a lightsaber…but let’s just say I’ve embraced this level of nerdiness as one my husband’s lovable quirks.
So much so, in fact, that when I was brainstorming ideas for a deployment homecoming sign, I knew it just had to be Star Wars themed.
I browsed Pinterest for ideas but weirdly the Star Wars genre of homecoming signs is relatively untapped. I was officially on my own in previously unexplored territory.
Which is why I’m giving myself huge props for thinking up these gems.
- Look, there is my father.
- Welcome back to the Dark Side, we have hugs.
- Welcome to the Dark Side, we missed you.
- Home you are, missed you we have.
- Home you are, many hugs you will get.
- (and the more R-rated version) Home you are, much love we will make.
I know, I surprised myself with my own level of Star Wars nerdiness.
I decided to keep things more PG for the actual ceremony (full disclosure, I may or may not have made the cheekier version to put in the bedroom) and chose ‘Look There is my Father’ as our official 2018 Deployment Homecoming Sign. And, of course, since I’m a huge Princess Leia fan, I absolutely had to include the famous Leia buns!
want to make your own Star Wars inspired homecoming sign?
- Silhouette Machine (I have the Portrait which only cuts paper up to 8 inches wide but this would be made infinitely more simple if you had the Cameo to cut a full 12 inches)
- Foam Display Board (I did white with black lettering but this would also look great with a black board and gold lettering)
- Black Cardstock or Construction Paper
- Adhesive (I used this one from Tombow)
- Star Wars Jedi font (if you need a different size or a different saying than the one I created)
+ First off, decide how large you want your homecoming sign to be. My display board was originally 20×30 but I cut it in half (with an exacto knife + a ruler) to form two 15×20 rectangles.
PRO TIP: Create a sample design in Photoshop using the same dimensions as your board to fine tune your overall design and the size of your Leia/Luke silhouettes and phrase.
+ Using the Silhouette Studio, cut out the two Studio3 files labeled ‘Look There Is Your Father’. These letters are sized down to fit the same size of display board I used. (Again, if you need to change the letter size for some reason or you’re using a different cut machine, download the free Star Wars font I linked above).
+ Remove your letters and arrange them on your board. Measure the remaining space on your board and use your measurements to determine the dimensions of your character silhouette.
+ Cut out your Leia buns or Luke silhouette using the PNG files included in the download file.
+ Use rolling adhesive (I don’t recommend liquid Elmer’s Glue for this project) to adhere your silhouette and your quote to your board.
And voila!! You have the perfect homecoming sign for the Star Wars aficionado in your life!
This sign was a big favorite at our homecoming ceremony (I saw so many people point it out and take photos) and Zach got a big kick out of my newfound level of Star Wars-iness. (E was much more interested in trying to peel off the letters but I do think she was a fan of the Leia buns).
Do you have a loved one who would love this sign? If you’ve ever made a homecoming sign, what did it say?
